Balloon Baby

I'm thinking ahead to Father's Day and trying out a few ideas for some fun and colourful cards. Our kids are still really little (2 1/2 and 8 months respectively, as I write this), so I decided to take advantage of one of my favourite baby sets. It's called "Moon Baby" and it's absolutely adorable! This little baby was actually holding an umbrella, but with some clever masking I was able to make him hold a bunch of balloons instead.

My daughter also loves rainbows and has been singing songs about them nonstop this last week, so I thought a rainbow colour scheme would be perfect. Using some alcohol markers, I coloured the balloons, the "You" diecut and the edges of the cardstock.

The beauty of alcohol markers is that they can blend almost seamlessly, which is how I created the fun rainbow gradient effect for the diecut and card border.

Another little detail I added to this card was copper thread connecting each balloon to the little baby's hand. To achieve this look, I actually tied one end of each thread to the balloon and trimmed it to the right length. Using a needle, I poked a hole just under where the baby's hand is and threaded the other end of each string through. I secured these loose ends to the back of the panel with regular tape. To create the appearance of the loose strands under the baby's fist, I glued five little pieces to the underside of the baby's hand so it looked like they were dangling down. I have to say, I was pleased with the result! I can definitely see using this technique again.

While this is intended as a Father's Day card, it could easily be adapted for many occasions just by changing the sentiment stamped inside. Mother's Day? A card for a special daycare worker or nanny? Grandparents' Day? It would even make a lovely baby shower card or perhaps a first birthday card, I think. So many possibilities!

Do you have any ideas for Father's Day cards for the special men in your life? It'll be June before we know it!

P.S. -- The "Moon Baby" stamp set by Stampin' Up that I used for the baby image will retire in less than two weeks, so if you love it, get it while you can! There is another baby themed one in next year's catalogue (one of the perks of being a demonstrator is seeing the new stuff early!), and I think they coordinate beautifully together, but Moon Baby is just too precious in my opinion. You should see the other images in the set. I knew the first time I saw it that I couldn't pass it up!
